Welcome to MoonSighting.Net!!!! Moon Sighting has been  Sunnah and all Muslims around the Globe no matter which sect they belong to followed this for centuries. When devices were developed which made moon sighting easier, muslims started using them to get help in determining the timing of birth of new moon. Some astromers came up with a thought that muslims should get rid of the moon sighting process itself and start following the calculation method. The Calculation Method means merely to estimate the date on which moon will the sighted. 

             However, this calculation is a probability there is no guarantee that the moon will be absolutely sighted on the calculated date. Just as the weather reporter reports that there may be thunderstroms, rain over the weekend. But sometimes his prediction goes wrong and the weekend weather remains sunny. People will not just assume its raining outside just because the weather reporter said so, the look outside to verify if it really is raining before carrying an umberalla. Same theory applies in the context of moon sighting, you cannot just believe that moon has been sighted based on the prediction made by astronomers. You will have to go out and sight the moon and confirm that the moon has indeed been sighted. 


        It is one thing to attain knowledge about moon , its birth, its sighting and other astronomical skills but the bottom line here is to use common sense. There is no place for ego and self-centeredness in the Matters related to Islam, the Prophet PBUH and Allah SWT. There were astronomers and astrologists during the time of Prophet PBUH and much earlier periods. Unlike our modern astromers and astrologists, they were capable to determining the time of births of various Prophets. Therefore, the assumption that people were uneducated and illiterate during the time of Prophet fails to convince us.

In order create a Unity among Muslims of all sects, Moonsighting.net which started in the year 2003  and got redesigned in 2009, started collecting information of authentic moon sighting reports from muslim organizations, islamic centers and hilal committees around the world and provide it on our website.

MoonSighting.net will serve as a network of different world wide hilal committees, islamic organizations to provide the authentic moon sighting reports to Muslims who follow the Sunnah of Prophet PBUH and who intend to fast after the Moon has ben sighted.
